Former North Melbourne forward Saverio Rocca has encouraged clubs to allow more time for goal-kicking practice with Champion Data statistics revealing accuracy from set shots was just 54.6 per cent last season.

13th on the AFL all-time goal-kicking list and now an NFL punter, Rocca believes every kick should be scrutinised so players can improve their techniques.

“I think as a forward you certainly want to get your 30 to 40 shots at goal during and straight after training,” he told the Herald Sun.

“And I think that every kick needs to be analysed and each player needs to know in themselves how to analyse what they did wrong. That’s where the major improvement will come.”

North Melbourne was one of the better clubs in the competition for accuracy ranked 7th for set shots at 56.1% and 2nd for all scoring shots at 53.2%.

With clubs employing specialist goal kicking coaches, Rocca said he was considering such a move.

“I had dinner with Richo (St Kilda coach Alan Richardson) and Browny (North development coach Gavin Brown) a week ago. We’ve been good friends since I played at Collingwood and I plan on going down to St Kilda, North Melbourne and Collingwood, where my brother (Anthony) works and have a look around.

“It will be an option but I can’t really commit to anything at the moment. Hopefully there might be a couple of opportunities long-term where I can get in and help some teams with their goal kicking and kicking in general.

“Every player is different and you have to be able to make sure that they stay in tune and try not to change them too much,” Rocca added.

“But you can tinker a little bit with things that I’ve learnt and try an incorporate that into their kicking style. There’s certainly a model of what you want, but some guys aren’t going to be able to get to that.”

Rocca, 40, will return to the United States in April in a bid to play at least one more season with the Washington Redskins.

Rocca kicked 748 goals for Collingwood and North Melbourne.
