James Hird has flagged the possibility of six major inclusions to the Essendon side to take on North Melbourne this Sunday at Etihad Stadium.

With assistant coach Mark Thompson labeling the encounter as a 'Grand Final' for the Bombers, Hird also called it an important game.

"If we want to make the finals it's an important game to win and play well in," Hird said at Etihad Stadium before training.

"We've got at least four back this week and maybe six. For us it's a matter of how many we want to bring back in.

"With Crameri, Monfries, Fletcher, Hibberd, Stanton and Ryder all a chance to come back there's some very good players there.

The possible returns of Crameri and Ryder would strengthen the Bombers up forward, while also allowing Michael Hurley to switch between the 50's similar to his role against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

However while Hird said he'd be 'confident' on most of the aforementioned players being fit, he would not be drawn on just how many he would consider bringing into the side.

"All six of them have given themselves a pretty good chance to play...six might be too many to bring back all in one week."

There will be at least two changes, with Jason Winderlich and Ben Howlett both missing Sunday's game after suffering hamstring injuries in Essendon's close loss to the Crows.

Hird also claimed his team 'were probably a bit lucky to win' in Round 1 after Hamish McIntosh missed a kick after the siren.

"Obviously they've got some really good talent in Swallow, Wells and Petrie playing well. Harvey's very dangerous. They run the ball very well. If we can't defend the ground then we'll be in for a very long night."
