You’d be forgiven in thinking Jy Simpkin had much more than three years in the AFL system.
Since arriving at the club with pick 12 in the 2016 AFL Draft, he’s notched up 56 games, and gotten better every year.
Now he’s taken another big step in his development, joining North Melbourne’s leadership group.
“It’s a massive honour,” Simpkin told North Media.
“North is obviously such a great club, and you’re surrounded by good people, and that has really helped develop me as a person.”
Simpkin joins Jack Ziebell, Shaun Higgins, Robbie Tarrant, Ben Cunnington, Jamie Macmillan, Trent Dumont and Jasper Pittard in the new-look eight-man group.
"Be true to who you are ... you don't have to change. You've been voted here for a reason, because of who you are right now."

“I’m looking forward to learning a lot from the other guys in there (the leadership group),” Simpkin said.
After taking his game to new heights in the 2019 season, Simpkin has been one of the strongest performers in the pre-season to date.
“I’m still working on my game myself, but I’ve tried to lead by example over the pre-season with my actions.”
The number 12 says the influence of coach Rhyce Shaw has had a strong impact on his ability to lead.
“He’s given me massive confidence in myself, and wants us to be ourselves and do what we do best.”
Simpkin played more midfield minutes last year, and had some standout games, including three 30-plus possession performances.
“Consistency is key for me. I know I can do it and have those good games, so it’s finding the form week in, week out and not dropping away,” he said.
Simpkin’s professionalism has impressed his fellow leaders.
“He’s really established himself,” Shaun Higgins said.
“It’s an important addition for the future, because he’s going to be a leader here for a long time.
“He’s still got some learning to do in that area, but having senior guys around him is going to fast-track his development.
“He really matured last year and became a senior guy out there on the field for us.”
