Hawthorn remains open to the possibility of trading key position player Ryan Schoenmakers during the NAB AFL Draft Period.

AFL.com.au understands his name was raised with at least two Melbourne based clubs in opening day talks on Monday but the 23-year-old did not fit into their plans.

However Hawthorn list manager Graham Wright conceded on AFL Trade Radio on Thursday that some clubs had made enquiries about Schoenmakers who is contracted for next season.

"We're open-minded from his perspective as to what he wants to do but at this stage he is committed to Hawthorn so that is a good thing," Wright said.

Wright said it was too early in the trade period to determine exactly what might unfold in relation to several Hawthorn players as any enquiries were only preliminary at this stage.

"I have had a couple ask the question [about Schoenmakers] but it hasn't been that serious but we're only three or four days into a 10-day trade period so there is a long way to go and we will have to see what happens over the next week," Wright said.

Although Schoenmakers is understood to have mulled over his future after Hawthorn decided to recruit defender James Frawley from Melbourne as a free agent, he believes he can improve on his performances in 2014 and it would take a compelling offer for him to leave the club.

Schoenmakers has played 79 games for the Hawks including the 2012 Grand Final after being pick No.16 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.

He cemented his spot in the team in 2012 as a tall defender and looked to have taken a huge step forward in the first four games of 2013, showing good form and strength in defence.

Unfortunately for Schoenmakers, he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and missed the rest of the season due to a full reconstruction.

He returned to senior football in round seven in 2014 and played both as a forward and defender, kicking eight goals but taking time to find his pace and balance.

He played 15 games but could not keep his spot for the finals with the Hawks preferring the reliable Matt Spangher in defence as they won back-to-back premierships.
