Werribee coach Scott West has commended the work of the North-listed players who played an outstanding role in Werribee’s 65-point win over Port Melbourne on Sunday.
The Tigers kicked 16 goals to four after quarter-time to record a resounding victory, with several Kangaroos’ stars putting their case forward for a senior call-up.
Speaking to NMFC.com.au, West reviewed the performances of the North players involved.
Majak Daw (8 possessions, 11 hit-outs, 4 goals)
“Majak was terrific. I thought his timing was a lot better. His run and jump at the footy was also much better.
“I think his forward pressure has really improved in his game, not just in the air but on the deck as well. He’s had a look at it (AFL football), played a few games and probably came back a bit scratchy, but he’s been building.
“He had a few one-grab marks and rucked well. He probably didn’t get as much chance in the ruck today as Cuz (Daniel Currie) but I think that was just the way we needed to set up to play better football. I thought today was the result of a lot of hard work and training by Majak.”
Daniel Currie (17 possessions, 31 hit-outs)
“Currie’s been starting forward in our last couple of games but I reckon starting him in the ruck really sets the tone for the day.
“He got his first hands on the footy, gave us first use and obviously you can get going your way forward from there.”
Will Sierakowski (22 possessions)
“Siera was good in the first term but after quarter-time he was outstanding.
“His run, his delivery, his ability to be able to get up and down the whole ground, not just from the defensive end of the wing, but he was also pushing inside forward 50. Will was great. “
Jordan Gysberts (27 possessions)
“Gys played probably one of his best games. He got a bit of ball outside which is probably an area of his game the Kangaroos have been working on to get that spread from him.
“We’ve got a really good quality midfield, alongside Jarred Moore and Tim McGenniss; those guys stamped the game for us.”
Tim McGenniss (26 possessions, 1 goal)
“He’s (McGenniss) just a kid and we set him a challenge to play on Chris Kane which was big for him because he’s one of their main players, and I thought Tim did a great job on him.
“He won his own ball too. It’s one thing to play on someone and stop them but then to reverse it and make them chase you is a real bonus.
“He’s an elite runner and that’s what we said to him, ‘you’re an elite runner, go with him and then get off him.’”
Kieran Harper (11 possessions, 1 goal)
“Harps is not renowned for getting a heap of the footy so what we’re looking for is that manic pressure through the forward line, getting up the ground and using his speed.
“It’s always the small forward’s argument when you have a quieter game, that there’s so many tall targets up there, it’s very difficult for them all to be statistically in the game. But I thought he remained in the game throughout and his pressure was good.”
Ayden Kennedy (22 possessions, 6 marks)
“He was probably the one who was a little bit off today. But in saying that, he still got a bit of the footy and created run through the middle part of the ground."
Michael Firrito (20 possessions, 4 marks) and Scott McMahon (14 possessions, 6 marks)
“Having talent like that in your team is just a huge bonus, for us as Werribee and me as a coach.
“I thought the two of them worked hand in hand really well. One went and the other one came back. The communication and understanding between the two of them was outstanding because they’ve obviously played so much together."
