Mystery surrounds the make-up of North’s forward line structure for round one with spearhead Drew Petrie saying the club has many options to consider.
With the ideal combination yet to be determined by Brad Scott, Saturday’s final NAB Challenge match against Richmond at Etihad Stadium could reveal a lot about how the side will look.
Speaking on FiveAA, Petrie discussed how the pre-season has illustrated the club’s increased depth and the battle for spots.
“We trained today (Thursday) and it was the white team against the blue team,” Petrie said.
“Often the blue team is the side that’s the so called ‘likely’ side to play the weekend.
“So many times throughout the pre-season the white team has dominated parts of training, so the depth has really grown at the club.
“(Jarrad) Waite is going to add to that, and Ben Brown basically saved us from going out in the first week of the finals last year against Essendon. He’s been able to train a lot in the last month and he’s moving across the ground really well. Majak (Daw) as well, he’s been taking marks one grab and looking impressive.”
The NAB Challenge victory over Hawthorn was achieved with what Brad Scott jokingly referred to as ‘the world’s tallest forward line’.
In a Round 1 game that is likely to be a couple of steps above the intensity that was on display in Shepparton, Petrie is still unsure about the best setup.
“We’ve toyed with four talls over the NAB series. Whether it’s worked or not, I’m not too sure.
“Typically we’ve played with three talls in the forward line with one of those being able to do the ruck.
“You can’t have too many lumbering blokes holding you back. We’d probably need a more lively forward line, so it’d be hard to squeeze four talls in.”
