He’s considered among one of the league’s most damaging rucks, but Todd Goldstein admits he can get better.
Speaking to The Age’s Daniel Cherny, the North big man said he’ll be aiming to have greater influence around the ground in 2015.
“I still think I have a lot of improvement to come because in my ruckwork I've been impacting games but I still haven't consistently been able to get the high possessions and take a lot of marks,” Goldstein said.
“It's just about getting more reps at it, practicing reading the ball in flight.”
Goldstein boasted a career-high hit-out tally last year (838), including 54 in the Semi Final win against Geelong.
It proved to be a memorable night both personally and for the team.
With just 30 seconds remaining and the game in the balance, the number 22 pulled down a match-saving mark deep in defence.
“I think I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. I was probably lucky that I read the play all right, but I also know that if I wasn't there Scotty Thompson was right behind me waiting to mark it as well,” he recalled.
"I just remember the jubilation when that siren went, to know that we'd finally beaten Geelong and managed to hold on. Ten minutes before that I thought we'd comfortably win the game.”
The experience of victories against the Cats and Bombers, and a run deep into September set to be of great benefit to North.
"They were two massive games for the whole group, going into that finals series we had maybe only half a dozen players who had won a final and knew how that feeling was so I think just to be able to come from behind in that Essendon game first of all and show the mental resilience to be able to come back from 30 points down and win, and then the Geelong game, the complete opposite,” Goldstein said.
"We can only imagine what winning a prelim and grand final would be like, it'd be 100 times better than the feeling we got last year."
The pain of the loss to Sydney is still obvious.
"It was pretty hard to swallow for a few weeks, and even now just to think about. It was very disappointing.
"I think we built it up that we were ready to go and that we had the right game plan to win the game. Unfortunately, on that night we just weren't able to execute and credit to Sydney - they played unbelievable.”
But that disappointment will only drive the Kangaroos to go one step further this year.
