When the Roos travel, there’s always downtime. NMFC.com.au catches up with various room-mates in an effort to get to know them better and find out exactly what they get up to away from home.

It’s Round 6 and we are in Perth to play Freo. We caught up with Ryan Bastinac and Ben Cunnington and interviewed them separately to obtain some interesting insights.

Last movie you watched – rating out of 10:
Basty: The Ugly Truth. It’s a bit of a girly flick…a bit of romance but I actually liked it. I’d give it a 7.5 out of 10

Cunners: The Lego Movie…I saw that after the game against Collingwood. It wasn’t that great to be honest. I’d give a 3 out of 10. The popcorn was the best part about it.

Favourite app?
Basty: Snapchat or Instagram. It’s a good way to communicate with the boys and send around some funny pictures.

Cunners: Willy Weather. I like to check out the reports for fishing.

Favourite music?:
Basty: I love One Direction…seriously. They’re my favourite band. I know I’ll cop it but I’m open to that. A lot of the boys know already that they’re my favourite.

Cunners: I’m not into music really, I have no idea. I don’t even have a favourite band or anything. I’ve got no clue.

Roomies’ worst habits?
Basty on Cunners: He doesn’t always brush his teeth.

Cunners on Basty: He’s always so late…or leaving everything to the very last minute. If we are due on the bus at 5.10pm, he’ll still be in the shower at 5.05pm. He’ll make it on in time, but just. I’m out the door at five-o’clock and he’s still all over the place, it’s ridiculous.

Pre-match superstitions?
Basty: If I get a haircut, I have to have one training session with it before I play. I wear Speedos under my shorts in every game and also have to run out onto the ground last.

Cunners: I don’t have any really. Pasta a couple of nights before I suppose would be the nearest thing. That’s not really a superstition though.

Weirdest superstition?
Basty: I’ve heard one player in the AFL has to wear a brand new pair of boots every game.

Cunners: I found out one today…(Nick) Dal Santo was saying how he has to run through the banner last and has to touch the top of the banner but can’t be touched by any other player at that time. I was threatening to touch him when we run out against Freo. He also has this thing where he won’t touch a footy until the warm-up. He won’t take a ball until we actually start kicking in the warm-up and never before. Even in the rooms when we’re doing a bit of touch and that, he won’t have a bar of it.

Pre-game activities?
Basty and Cunners: We will go for a walk together and when we get to the ground we always go out and have a kick that includes four shots at goal in a bit of a competition. So a kick, then four shots at goal.

Favourite mini-bar item?
Basty: A Kit-Kat

Cunners: Whatever they have…I’d say a Kit-Kat.

Biggest eater?
Basty: Daniel Currie. He doesn’t even chew. He just smashes it and doesn’t even taste it.

Cunners: Turbo (Scott Thompson)…he has two foot longs at Subway.

Worst room-mate and why?
Basty: I wouldn’t want to room with Loose (Scott McMahon). Any one new in the side has to room with Loose because no one wants to room with him.

Cunners: I’ve roomed with Cutie Loose and I don’t think he’s that bad. It’s more Goldy (Todd Goldstein) because he snores.

What do you love/hate about playing away?
Basty: It’s good to get to a different part of Australia and do some different things. Have a look around at the different cities and just hang with the boys. I hate the flying and having to travel.

Cunners: I don’t mind the change of scenery and hate being away from home too long.

Best and worst interstate ground?
Basty: I like Perth because it’s so big. I like the big grounds. So, I hate the SCG because of the opposite reason…it’s so small.

Cunners: I love the SCG because it’s smaller…my type of footy. Worst would be…and it’s not great because we’re playing there, but Subi (Subiaco/Patersons Stadium) because it’s so bloody big.

Who do you miss most when you play interstate?
Basty: My girlfriend and dog…and parents.

Cunners: My girlfriend Belinda and my boat.
