Archer joined new coach Brad Scott at Arden Street in the searing heat on Monday and says he is looking to ease his way into the caper.
“It was strange not being a part of the drills. There were a few times there when I felt like jumping in and getting involved,” Archer told kangaroos.com.au.
“Today was really just a case of coming down and feeling my way. I obviously didn’t say too much to the boys but I will have my chance in the coming weeks.”
Excited by the prospect of being involved with the club’s young backline, Archer says he’s equally enthused by working alongside new assistant coach Shane Watson.
“We’ve got some young boys in Nathan Grima and Scott Thompson down there but the one thing I was surprised by is their size. I really couldn’t get over just how big the pair is.”
The dual premiership player says there’s plenty he can pass on to the inexperienced duo.
“I think defending has changed a lot since I played even though it’s only been a short time. There are definitely little things I can help with though. It’s really important to not just kill the ball in a contest, but work the ball to your advantage.”
And as for his trademark aggression and attack on the ball, Archer says the boys are already well equipped.
“You can’t teach that. I think those two in particular are pretty right in that department. They both have a real hunger to win every contest and they’ll go in as hard as any player.”
Archer will assist at least two training sessions per week and hopes to attend most home matches.
