The North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos have signed their third and final rookie for the 2020 AFLW season with Irishwoman Aileen Gilroy joining the side.
A Gaelic Footballer from Mayo in Ireland, the 27-year-old was identified through the club’s scouting networks.
Gilroy has been a feature of the Mayo Women’s Gaelic Team for some years, having previously been vice captain of the side, culminating in selection for the All-Star Ireland Team (midfield) in 2017. A multi-talented athlete, she also represented her country in the Under 17 European Championship Soccer Final.
“From the first time we were able to watch her play, Aileen’s power, speed, and ability to break the lines off half-back and through the midfield were hard to ignore,” North AFLW recruiting manager Rhys Harwood said.
“Aileen has been a top-level athlete in Ireland for a significant period of time.
“Her experience and professionalism will add to our group both on and off the field, and we couldn’t be more excited to have her at North Melbourne.”
North will take five selections into the AFLW National Draft in October.
