While many experts predicted Essendon would find it tough to even win a game in 2016, John Worsfold’s team have proven they are far from easybeats.
The Bombers defeated Melbourne in round two, and have been right in the game against Geelong, Carlton and Sydney at different stages.
This week, another big challenge looms against North.
“I expect us to compete. That’s all our expectations have been, to compete and play your role,” Essendon captain Brendan Goddard told the media on Monday.
“As simple as it sounds, and as cliché as it sounds, that’s what we’re trying to hang our hat on.”
Essendon had a promising first half against the Swans at the SCG; leading in the second term and trailing by 17 points at the long break. The visitors eventually fell by a significant margin, but will take plenty from the opening two quarters.
“We obviously (were able to compete) in the first half and that’ll be our aim (for four quarters) this week against a quality opposition,” Goddard explained.
Goddard was at Etihad Stadium to witness North’s thrilling seven point-victory against St Kilda.
“Again another really good team just finds a way to win. That’s what great teams do,” he said.
“They’ve got some really quality players, their talls are dangerous, their mids are in good form. It’s going to be another challenge and another positive to come out of another learning experience for the guys.”
