North Melbourne’s newly appointed assistant coach Rhyce Shaw has claimed his second consecutive Assistant Coach of the Year awarded from the AFL Coaches Association.
Shaw, who has recently joined Arden Street as the new defence coach, edged out Hawthorn duo Chris Newman and Darren Glass on Tuesday night.
The award is based on input from both players and coaches, with senior coaches required to rate the assistant and development coaches at their club based on their overall performance throughout the year, which is then matched by an average score given by the playing group.
Shaw was presented the prestigious accolade by former Swans assistant and now senior Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew, who praised the 36-year-old for his impact on the football club.
The former defender will be entrusted with working closely with the likes of Scott Thompson, Robbie Tarrant, Majak Daw and other North defenders throughout the 2019 season.
