Football is breaking down boundaries and barriers like never before and for North Melbourne, the proof is in the pudding.
For the past five-weeks, North has joined forces with the Werribee Football Club to deliver an afterschool Auskick program at Wyndham Park Primary.
The school was selected for its high multicultural population, with 80 per cent of participants born overseas, and the aim is to encourage students from non-traditional AFL backgrounds to get involved.
Despite being new to the game, the children are developing fast.
“The improvements of the new kids over five weeks was amazing and I loved how each week they’d come back to show what they'd practiced at home,” North’s community sport and recreation coordinator Stephenie Webb said.
20-30 kids, ranging from years one to four participated in each session, and most had little to no AFL experience.
“I really enjoyed being able to see their skills develop and even their interest in the game grow,” Webb added.
Besides offering the chance to learn footy and get outside, the clinic also provided an opportunity for the students to form bonds between different year levels, cultures, genders, and socio-economic backgrounds.
All the hard work ensuring there are new AFL champions in the making.
