Mason Wood has again showcased his remarkable endurance for a tall forward, winning North Melbourne's 2km time trial on Monday ahead of midfielder Trent Dumont and freshly claimed rookie Tom Wilkinson.

Wilkinson finally got his AFL chance at 22 when North claimed him at pick No.41 in Friday's NAB AFL Rookie Draft and the small forward appeared eager to impress in his first session at Arden St on Monday, setting the early pace in the time trial just ahead of Dumont.

However, when Wood surged with about 800m to go, Wilkinson and Dumont could not respond, leaving the forward to power to an impressive win.

Dumont and Wilkinson crossed the line together in equal second ahead of Luke McDonald (fourth), Jy Simpkin (fifth), Ben McKay (sixth), Shaun Atley (seventh), Jamie Macmillan (eighth) and Bailey Scott (ninth).

A flurry of players stopped the watch in equal 10th, including forward Taylor Garner, who was restricted to just six VFL games in 2018 by a horror run of groin and hamstring injuries.

Wood subsequently downplayed his time trial win but told AFL.com.au the strong performances across the Roos' group were a good sign the players were ready for a big pre-season.

The 192cm forward remains one of the most talented players on North's list but a succession of injuries has halted his progress, with the 13 games he played in 2018 the most he has managed in a season.

Wood won't be holding back this pre-season, however, saying his luck on the injury front is due to change.

"As boring as it sounds, the only thing you can do is take it session by session because the season is still such a long way away," Wood said.

"You can't take your foot off the gas either because you've got to put in the work and give yourself the best possible platform for the season.

"You obviously do everything you can to keep your body right, but some things are out of your control.

"But it's not something I'll waste my time worrying about."

Ben Brown, Jack Ziebell, Robbie Tarrant, Scott Thompson, Sam Durdin, Will Walker, Cameron Zurhaar, Kyron Hayden, Tristian Xerri and Curtis Taylor were among the Kangaroos who did not run in Monday's time trial.
