North legends Anthony Stevens and Glenn Archer love nothing more than a physical challenge and will be putting their bodies to the test once again, this time in the form of a grueling 50km walk.

The pair will be participating in the Upstream Challenge on November 5 to raise funds for charities.

Their journey begins in Melbourne’s CBD and follows the Yarra River upstream, before finishing in Donvale.

“I’m not sure what I’m getting myself into, but I’ll have Arch to lean on all the way,” Steven’s told NMFC.com.au.

The Isabella and Marcus Paediatric Brainstem Tumour Fund is one of the focuses for Archer and Stevens. For the latter, meeting Isabella’s dad was an eye-opening experience.

“Recently I was introduced to a dad whose daughter Isabella died from brain cancer,” Stevens said.

“I learned that brain cancer kills more of our kids in Australia than any other disease.

“By taking part in the Upstream Challenge, we’ll be raising money which will be used to research brain cancer in kids so that treatments can be developed.”

Upstream Foundation representative Paul Gruber explained how the challenge works.

“The Upstream Challenge is an annual event that has been held for the last eleven years and has raised in excess of $2.2 M for a wide variety of charities.

“We are able to ensure 100% of the funds raised will go directly to the supported projects due to the support provided by Upstream Print Solutions and the many other event supporters.”

Rob DeRose, co-founder of the Isabella and Marcus Paediatric Brainstem Tumor Fund, spoke about the work being done to try and find a cure for Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glimoa (DIPG).

“DIPG is the worst type of brain tumour and occurs most commonly in children between 5 and 9 years of age.

“As the cancer grows it damages many nerves and this causes an ever diminishing quality of life.

“The survival rate is 0% and most children die within 1 year of diagnosis. Research is desperately needed to develop treatments.”
