Majak Daw has been declared a certain starter for his highly anticipated comeback to football, after completing North VFL’s final training session on Saturday morning.
Defender Jamie Macmillan said Daw “passed with flying colours” and will line up against Sandringham at Arden St on Sunday.
“There wasn’t much to get through this morning for Maj … he’s good to go,” Macmillan said.
“He’s a pretty well-loved guy among the playing group, and a few of the boys are pretty disappointed they’re down in Hobart (for the AFL) this week and can’t make it tomorrow.
“The guys have obviously put a lot of time and effort into supporting Maj for the first half of the year and to see how far he’s come; it’s just going to be awesome tomorrow to see him play.”
Macmillan went on to recall the times he visited Daw in hospital when he was recovering from serious pelvis and hip injuries.
“To see the state that he was in, in terms of just the injuries he’d suffered was pretty shocking and eye-opening and then to see how far he’s come, it’s a true testament to his character and how much hard work he’s put in to get to where he wants to get to, and that’s obviously to play footy,” he said.
“It’s amazing that he’s been able to get this far and just looking forward to tomorrow … hopefully he can have a good game.”
Daw will be on restricted time and may only play around 20 minutes, but the focus will be simple, according to Macmillan.
“It’s get out there, have fun and get a kick,” he said.
“This is more than just footy and more than a game for him.
“He just wants to get out and have fun and we all exist here at a footy club to play footy on the weekend and it’s something he hasn’t been able to do for six months. He’s just rapt to be finally able to strap the boots on.”
North's VFL team will take on Sandringham on Sunday at Arden Street from 11.40am. Memberships and merchandise available.
