The North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos have signed pacey midfielder-forward Sophie Kavanagh as a replacement player for the upcoming AFLW season.
Kavanagh joins after Kangaroos draftee Georgia Stubs was placed on the club’s inactive list following a season-ending ankle injury.
Stubs, who was taken by the Kangaroos with pick No.30 in last December’s AFLW Draft, dislocated her right ankle during the club’s match simulation against St Kilda on August 10.
She was ruled out for the 2024 season earlier this week after undergoing surgery to repair the injury.
"To have Georgia’s first season end this way is incredibly unfortunate,” North Melbourne general manager of women’s football Erin Lorenzini said.
“We were looking forward to watching her development this season, but instead, we will all be there to support her as she begins her rehab.”
Kavanagh arrives at Arden Street from Greater Western Sydney’s VFLW program and the Parramatta Goannas in AFL Sydney’s Women’s Premier Division.
The 19-year-old also has a background in athletics, having competed at a high level.
"During her time at the Giants and Goannas, Sophie has shown the versatility to play a few different roles and her ability to cover the ground and break away from the opposition with her speed and athleticism," Lorenzini said.
"We look forward to welcoming her into our program."
Kavanagh will wear No.21.
