Hugh Greenwood has called time on his AFL career after 121 AFL games across three clubs.

Greenwood first came to the AFL when he joined Adelaide as a category B rookie in 2015 after a successful college basketball career with the University of New Mexico.

He made his debut in Round 9, 2017, and went on to play 51 games for the Crows, including the 2017 Grand Final in just his 15th AFL game.

Joining Gold Coast in the 2019 trade period, Greenwood’s two seasons for the Suns saw him add 32 games to his career tally

He arrived at North Melbourne at the end of 2021 when the club acquired the experienced midfielder as a free agent.

Shinboner No.1040, Greenwood played 38 games for the Roos over three seasons.

In the off-season, the 32-year-old switched from the No.18 guernsey to No.1, which he has previously worn at the Crows and Suns as a tribute to mother, Andree (Onny) who passed away in 2017 after a lengthy battle with breast cancer.

Off-field, Greenwood has been a dedicated ambassador for the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) since 2018.

Greenwood has been a driver of BCNA fundraising efforts at each of his three AFL clubs, raising awareness and his sincere support and advocacy to BCNA in honour of his late mother. All who know him struck by the depth of his commitment.

General manager of football Todd Viney paid tribute to Greenwood for his service to the game and the Kangaroos.

"Hughie has been a real leader on and off the field during his time here," Viney said.

"At each of his clubs he has been revered for his work ethic, versatility, competitiveness and team-first attitude.

"It’s a credit to him that he will leave the game knowing he has impacted so many of his teammates along the way.

"We wish Hughie, his partner Kjiersten, and children Tahj and Titus all the best in the next phase of their lives."

Greenwood wanted to thank some of those who helped him in his AFL journey:

"Thank you to the Adelaide Footy Club for taking a chance on me and allowing me to fulfill my AFL dream.

"Thanks also to the Suns for your belief in me and helping me find my best footy, and thank you to North Melbourne for providing an environment that my family and I loved playing for and raising a family around.

"To all to my teammates along the journey, thanks for embracing me and allowing me to be myself each and every day.

"And finally, most importantly, thank you to my friends, family, wife Kjiersten, and kids Titus and Tahj for all your love and support over the years.

"Being an athlete, we selfishly think we sacrifice so much to do what we do, but it doesn’t compare to the amount of sacrifices you have made for me over the journey in allowing me to live my AFL dream.

"For a basketballer that still can’t run or still can’t kick, to be sitting here almost 10 years on and over 100 AFL games later, fills me with such pride and gratitude.

"I walk away knowing I squeezed absolutely everything out of myself on the field, and also hope I was able to impact the community in a positive and lasting way.

"Although my time in the AFL is over, I’m excited and ready for my next chapter in life."
