North Melbourne’s George Wardlaw has continued his exciting start to his career, earning an AFL Rising Star nomination for his Round 13 performance against the GWS Giants at Blundstone Arena.
Playing on the ball against the Giants, Wardlaw showcased the toughness and versatility he brings to the Roos, kicking his first AFL goal and laying a game-high nine tackles.
He also finished with 22 disposals (10 contested) and six clearances.
Wardlaw was selected from the Oakleigh Chargers with pick No.4 in the 2022 AFL Draft and played his junior football with St Peters in the South Metro Junior Football League.
The 19-year-old made his highly-anticipated debut in Round 10 and has wasted no time rewarding fans for their patience.
In an opening four games full of promise, Wardlaw has averaged 17 disposals and ranks elite for clearances and tackles according to Champion Data.
Plaudits have followed from commentators such as Melbourne champion Garry Lyon, as well as North Melbourne interim senior coach Brett Ratten.
“He doesn’t need anyone to get the footy to him. He’s the one that goes out and gets it,” Ratten said ahead of Sunday’s game against the Giants.
“And if he doesn’t win the ball, he’s a very good tackler as well.”
Wardlaw joins teammate and close friend Harry Sheezel in the race for this year’s AFL Rising Star Award after Sheezel received a nomination for his performance on debut in Round 1.
