North Melbourne stalwart John Dugdale has been awarded Life Membership for his Service to Australian Football by the AFL.

One of the most influential players of his time, Dugdale played 248 games in the royal blue and white stripes between 1955-1970, kicking 358 goals, and captaining the club from 1968-1970.

Although he was a brilliant goal-kicker, Dugdale’s versatility saw him play in a variety of positions across the ground when required.

The famous number six lead North’s goal-kicking tally on no less than seven occasions, and was named in the North Team of the Century. 

A man who set many records in his time at Arden Street, Dugdale was among the first North players to be named as an All Australian when he received the honour in 1958 alongside teammate Allen Aylett.

Dugdale is fondly remembered for his marking ability, with an effort against St Kilda in 1961 being immortalized in an iconic photo (below). 

After finishing his playing career, Dugdale contributed to North off the field as the chairman of selectors under Ron Barassi.
