North tagger Ben Jacobs says he’s covering more ground than ever before in his new run-with role.
The 23-year-old was given the job of tagging Sydney’s Dan Hannebery in Round 11 and has seen his role shift from the running half-back role he had played early in the season.
Jacobs had no doubts that his transformation to tagger had made him a better footballer.
“Playing on the best players every week, I’m starting to learn what a work rate is and learning from each player,” Jacobs told RSN Racing & Sport on Monday.
He said the club’s fitness staff had told him his output on game day was up almost 20 per cent.
“Every week I’m taking notes after games and jotting down what I’m learning. I feel like I’m moving around the ground much better.
“I’ve found a role and I’m enjoying it. The club’s happy with me in that role. We’re winning of games of football too, which makes the tagging role even more enjoyable.”
While North may have defeated Carlton by 10 goals on Saturday, a second quarter lapse where the Blues were able to close to within a goal made for a fiery half-time meeting.
“It wasn’t ideal in the second quarter at all. Brad (Scott) gave us a bit of a rocket at half time and it was good to respond and come away with a good victory,” Jacobs said.
When asked what went wrong prior to the main break, Jacobs said the team had strayed from the game plan.
“We went away from what we’re good at. We took the foot off the gas and tried to play a bit cute.”
