The former Demon is trying to emulate the approach of his vice-captain Jack Ziebell and his hard-nosed attack on the footy in order to break into the side.
"I look up to Jack Ziebell and Ben Cunnington...they're a similar age, both stoppage players, they're the main two at the club that I look up to. I always watch them at games, what they do and how they get the ball," Gysberts told NMFC.com.au.
While Gysberts acknowledges Levi Greenwood is ahead of him in the race for selection, he's confident with the gains he's made since being at Aegis Park.
"I feel like I keep improving each week and getting better. It's definitely a big step up from where I was at last year, it's the first time I've been injury free so I've learnt a lot this year and I'll just keep going.
"It's hard to break in when you've got such a good midfield in the seniors and they're flying week in week out."
Determined to succeed, Gysberts is aiming to hone his skills as a defensive midfielder.
"The main thing I need to improve is transition, from offense to defence. I'm still trying to get involved defensively...it's something I'm continuing to work on with Crock (Darren Crocker) and Moorey (Jarred Moore)."
Crocker echoed the sentiments of the 21-year old and says the coaches have made it clear which aspects of Gysberts' game need improvement.
"He's well aware of the areas he needs to work on," the North assistant coach said.
"We're working really closely with him and hoping we'll get some really positive change between now and the end of the year that will give him the best possible chance of forcing his way into the seniors."
He may only have three games left to get there, but Gysberts isn't shying away from the challenge of debuting for North.
"If I do get that opportunity, I hope I can come in and make an impact and fill someone's spot like I've been playing all year.
"I'm still confident and I'll keep putting my hand up."
