Andrew Swallow believes Lindsay Thomas has been unfairly targeted for playing for free kicks and wants the media and fans to direct their attention elsewhere.
Thomas was awarded two high frees in front of goal against the Swans last night and it sparked controversy.
Following North's 26-point loss at the SCG, the captain said the club will back the small forward.
"Lindsay's obviously disappointed because I think he feels like he's been singled out," Swallow told the media at the airport on Saturday.
"It's not just one person, I think its across the league. There's individuals at every club that do it and I think its been unfairly pointed at him."
"We'll continue to back him in. He's been terrific for us over a long period of time and he's got the results."
Fox Footy's Dermott Brereton went the hardest at Thomas, calling the act a 'disgrace' but Swallow says his comments are misguided.
"From certain individuals in the media, trying to really target some of our players ... You shouldn't be directing it at any individual players," he said.
"It needs to be pointed more at the AFL and the rules committee if they want to stamp it out.
"We just play to the rules. If they're [the umpires] going to be calling them [free kicks], then I'm sure there'll be guys around the comp who are going to take advantage of it.
"I don't see why there's a bug fuss about it."
