An ongoing battle with a shoulder injury has brought a premature end to North Melbourne young gun Sam Wright's season.

The 20 year-old has battled through in recent weeks, but after being a late withdrawal from the side against Port Adelaide, club medical staff have opted to send him in for surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right shoulder.

"Sam has battled admirably to play with an injured shoulder and has been quite effective but the club has made the decision that he is too valuable to risk and we feel that immediate surgery is in his best interest," senior coach Brad Scott told kangaroos.com.au.

With 32 games to his name since his debut in 2009, Wright has become a valuable member of the Kangaroos' forward line with his clean hands and skill on both sides of the body.

He missed four games with shoulder soreness from round nine before returning against Essendon with three goals.

Despite his best endeavours, he'll have to wait until next year's NAB Cup campaign before taking the field again.

"Unfortunately we will lose him for the rest of the year but he will be back in full training by the time we commence pre-season training for the 2012 season," Scott added.
