North Melbourne Tasmania coach Darren Crocker says the Kangaroos are creating selection headaches as they continue their strong AFLW form.
Former All-Australian Jess Duffin was the unlucky omission for Sunday's 23-point win over Collingwood in Hobart, squeezed out of the side after youngster Amy Smith delivered a career-best game against Richmond last week.
Smith lined up on the wing alongside the returning Kaitlyn Ashmore, while Nicole Bresnehan shifted back into defence after playing much of her football higher up the ground this year.
Smith finished the clash with a team-high seven tackles, while Bresnehan helped restrict Collingwood’s Chloe Molloy to just six disposals for the game.
“We just felt on the back of last week’s performance that Amy was coming off her best AFLW game and deserved another opportunity to continue to develop her game … she got another opportunity on the wing and was one of our highest pressure players,” Crocker said.
“Nicole Bresnehan has been doing a really good job on the wing and felt she didn’t deserve to go out either. We know Nicole can play down back and I thought she played really well.
“I think the sign for any strong team is there has to be competition for spots. Frustratingly for ‘Duff’ she went out of the team this week.”
After showing impressive signs of development in the forward half of the ground all season, Tahlia Randall put together the type of performance against Collingwood that she’s been threatening to produce all season.
Laying four tackles for the game, Randall kicked both her goals from winning free kicks for holding the ball, but her ability as a forward target also helped to create scoring opportunities for her teammates.
Crocker says he’s been impressed with her application to learning her new role.
“The first thing about changing a role is being able to embrace it, accept it, and then learn it … she was the highest spoiling defender in the competition last year and we felt for the sake of the team she might be better served to go forward,” he said.
“She’s been unbelievable with wanting to get better in that role and she’s doing that not just for herself, but also the team.
“It’s a testament to ‘Tahls’ that she’s really embraced it and she’s starting to get a bit of reward for effort.
With Round 7’s victory, the Kangaroos remain undefeated in their eight AFLW contests played in Tasmania.
The vocal Tasmanian crowd was once again out in force, and Crocker says his side appreciates being able to play at their home away from home.
“I’ve said it before, they (the players) really enjoy coming here,” he said.
“They’ve got a really solid routine even though it’s a fly in, fly out [situation]. We feel our routine is in a good place for games here and we can prepare really well.
“It’s becoming a bit of a fortress which is nice. It’s always nice to see our Tassie fans come out and support us … we’re growing some support down here.”
