VFLW R9 team: Young forward to provide spark

North Melbourne has made five changes to its VFLW side ahead of its away clash with Casey

North Melbourne has made five changes to its VFLW side ahead of its away clash with Casey, highlighted by the inclusion of AFLW-listed Charli Granville and Madisen Maguire who makes her club debut.

Small forward Granville will play her first VFLW match when she runs out on Saturday and will look to provide a spark after the loss to Collingwood.

    12:05

Maguire, who has been named in the forward line, will want to make a strong impression on her new team after formerly playing for Geelong's AFLW side.

The club debutant has had an interrupted start to the season, most recently dealing with a hand injury.

Joining Granville and Maguire among the inclusions are Kiara Delia, Ellie Macdonald and Georgia Nicholas.

After kicking two fourth-quarter goals against Collingwood last weekend, key forward Sophia McCarthy has been managed.

Reni Hicks, Tunisha Kikoak, Jasmyn Thompson and Annie Xanthos are also out of the team.

Cassidy Mailer has been named in the backline and joins Granville as the only AFLW-listed players in this week's side.

VFLW R9 match report: Casey capitalises to overcome Kangas

North Melbourne's VFLW side went down to the Casey Demons on Saturday, in a tightly contested battle that saw the Roos fall by 13 points

North Melbourne's VFLW side went down to the Casey Demons on Saturday, in a tightly contested battle that saw the Roos fall by 13 points.

The first quarter was played between the arcs before the Demons kicked the first goal of the game five minutes into the second quarter.

The Kangaroos had plenty of inside 50s but failed to capitalise on their chances, while the Demons managed to continuously hit the scoreboard at the other end against the overall run of play.

    1:23:56

"It was a very disappointing result, it was game we thought we had a really good shot of winning if we played to our systems, (but) a lack of discipline leaked a few goals," coach Steph Binder told NMFC Media.

"When we had our opportunities, we couldn't capitalise."

Former Geelong AFLW player and club debutant, Madisen Maguire kicked North Melbourne's first goal of the match as her teammates flooded her with praise.

AFLW-listed forward Charli Granville provided a spark, kicking a classy goal from the pocket with five minutes left in the third quarter.

"They were both (Maguire and Granville) really good, they both gave us really good pressure and both kicked really impressive goals," Binder said.

"On debut for us they were both really good, so I'm really proud of their efforts."

Jess Mourney led the way for the Kangaroos with 17 disposals while Marli Klaumanns-Moller got busy with 14.

Energy levels were high at the end of the third quarter with Emily Paterno slamming home a huge goal after the siren to cut the margin to seven points.

"Vibes were up at three-quarter time and we were pretty confident going into the last, the girls were up and about," Binder said.

It wasn't enough though as Casey's Niamh O'Neill kicked the first and only goal of the last quarter within the first minute to ultimately seal the win for the home side.

"They kicked a quick goal and being in that position they were able to throw extras behind the ball, so it was very congested and every time we went forward we were going to their numbers," Binder said.
