Walking into his hotel room in Utah, Trent Dumont was understandably feeling a little anxious.

The North Melbourne draftee had just completed a 24-hour journey from Australia and was about to meet his new team-mates for the first time.

But his mind was quickly put at ease, despite some initial nerves after being greeted by room-mate Nick Dal Santo.

"I was pretty star-struck. He's obviously a quality player. He's done a lot of great things," Dumont told NMFC.com.au.

"Just seeing him lying there, I was a bit shocked, but he's a great bloke and he's made me feel welcome."

Just two weeks ago, Dal Santo himself was in the same position and knew exactly how the draftee would be feeling.

During Wednesday's (Utah time) skills session at Brigham Young University, the former Saint and veteran Brent Harvey took Dumont and fellow draftee Ben Brown under their wings.

"They've been fantastic. They are a great group of fellas. That's what you expect from a club and these guys are professional and made me feel welcome," Dumont added.

"Boomer just knows where to find space and I was just picking up on the queues that he used to get in position to get the ball.

"Nicky Dal's a good communicator and he really helped explaining the drills to me."

The recruits were afforded some time to collect themselves on day one, but it was by far an easy initiation.

Introduced to the group before training, they participated in most of the action before taking a step back and watching how their team-mates go about it in full-ground drills.

Then it was outside for running as the sun shone for a rare time in November.

"I wanted to get straight in and they (the coaches) did that. They eased me in a little bit to what the other boys were doing, but it was still pretty tough considering it was my first session," Dumont added.

"You can't really breathe. Your chest just wants to cave in. You are gasping for air, but it's just not coming in. I'll get used to it in the next couple of days."

No doubt still feeling jet-lagged, Dumont and Brown will enjoy a day off on Thursday before hitting the track again on Friday at Utah University.
