NORTH Melbourne is taking this year's most inexperienced finals team into its elimination final against West Coast at Patersons Stadium on Sunday, but thinks its youthful energy and freshness might be an advantage.

Compared with the other seven teams playing in the first week of the 2012 finals series, North's selected 22 for Sunday's game is the least experienced in terms of average games (94.9) and average finals played (1.95).

It also contains 13 finals debutants, four more than any other 2012 finalist.

If North and West Coast line up as selected, North will be conceding an average experience edge of 21 games and four finals.

The Roos, who last played finals in 2008, will also be fielding 12 more finals debutants, with Jacob Brennan the only Eagle who will have to adjust to the rise in intensity from the home and away season.

North's fresh-faced finals look is underlined when you compare it to this year's most experienced finalist, Collingwood. The Magpies team that lost to Hawthorn on Friday night had played on average almost 36 more games and nine more finals than North's selected 22.

North ruckman Todd Goldstein will be one of North's 13 finals debutants on Sunday, but said the Roos were not concerned about their finals inexperience.

"It's not something we've really spoken about too much, but I think the excitement of the group is something we can harness and turn into an advantage," Goldstein said.

"We've done the same amount of work as all the other teams. Brad [Scott] has been training us for this sort of opportunity and we're ready to take it.

"Looking at our list we've got a lot of players who haven't played finals, but all the boys know how much work we've had to put in over the past four years to give ourselves another opportunity.

"At the end of the day, the ball will still be red, the grass will still be green and there will still be four goalposts.

"It doesn't change too much. It really is still only a game of footy and we're going over there to win it."

Goldstein also said the current North group carried very few mental scars from the Roos' poor recent record in finals.

Since their 1999 premiership year, the Roos have won just two of nine finals, their seven losses coming at an average margin of 75 points.

"That's something we haven't really looked at at all," Goldstein said.

"I was at the club in 2007 when we had a shocker against Geelong [a 106-point qualifying final defeat] and then against Port Adelaide [an 87-point preliminary final loss].

"But we've got a completely different group now with our own history to make. And all we can focus on is what's going to happen on Sunday."
