"We're definitely doing a lot more running in the middle distance and repeat efforts, more so this year than others," Cunnington told the team on SEN's Morning Glory.
The 20 year-old says the change is important.
"It's just like in a game where you have to get to contest to contest with the fatigue and lactic acid."
Cunnington believes the added emphasis on middle distance running, combined with the club's second trip to Utah has led to positive results.
"Before Utah we did our tests and then after we came back everyone was beating their best times. It does give you a few extra percentage points on your endurance so that's why we head over there."
However, now that the majority of the players have enjoyed a rest over the new year, the fitness work will take more of a back seat.
"We'll start using the ball a bit more now that we're back from our Christmas break, leading to a lot more full ground drills."
With just six weeks until the NAB Cup double header against Hawthorn and Richmond, anticipation is already high among the Kangaroos' players.
