A hard-nosed 191cm inside midfielder, Hugh Greenwood’s pursuit of a professional basketball career has seen him become a late bloomer in our game.

After playing college basketball with the New Mexico Lobos, Greenwood trained with the Utah Jazz of the NBA before ultimately returning to Australia to renew his passion for football.

He spent four season with the Crows before arriving on the Gold Coast where he played 32 games in two years. He became a Roo prior to the 2022 season after the club swooped in to pick up the veteran.

North Melbourne debut: Round 1, 2022

Career Brownlow votes: 15

2023: The hardened onballer found himself in and out of the senior side in 2023, resulting in 14 AFL appearances.

He found some consistency during mid-season and was at his contest-commanding best against the eventual premiers Collingwood in Round 11 when he tallied 25 disposals, 11 tackles, and 10 clearances. Three weeks later following the side's bye, he booted two goals against the Dogs from 12 touches.

In the off-season, the 31-year-old made the decision to switch from the No.18 guernsey to No.1 - a tribute to mother, Andree 'Onny' Greenwood, who died in 2017, nine years after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
