Story of the game:

In perfect conditions, Werribee burst out of the blocks with a four goal to one first quarter away from home.

Port Melbourne fought back with the breeze in the second term, reducing the margin to just ten points at the main change.

A five goal premiership quarter saw the Tigers out to a handy 24-point lead, but the job wasn’t done yet.

“They (Port Melbourne) had the wind in the last quarter and gave us a bit of a scare, but then we fought back pretty strongly and had a really gutsy win,” Senior Development Coach Gavin Brown said.

Werribee held on by two goals for its second victory of the season.

Points of interest:

1. Majak Daw pushed his case for a senior call-up with a best afield performance.

Daw finished with 17 disposals and booted three goals.

“He was the story of the day really. He was brilliant,” Brown said.

“Some of his marking was absolutely spectacular. It was a bit of a highlight reel today.”

One play in particular stood out for the North big man.

“He ran past two blokes on the wing with blistering speed, tapped the ball out in front of himself, fended off the first bloke, got around the next one, ran another ten metres then put a short pass inside 50 to a leading teammate," Brown explained.

"The whole crowd was really on their feet when he was on the ground."

2. Lachlan Hansen took another step forward in his return from a hip injury, playing close to an entire game in defence.

While Brown said Hansen is still working back to his best, there were some very promising signs.

"He intercepted marks three or four times throughout the day, like the Lachie Hansen that we’ve seen in the AFL.

"It was really great to see him getting back to doing that sort of stuff.  He stepped it up a bit today. His form was better again."

3. First-year player Ed Vickers-Willis performed strongly in a stopping role.

"By in large it was a really, really solid game. He just snuffed out whoever he played on," Brown said.

"He did a terrific defensive job. He was all over them. He’s a bit of a natural hard-nosed defender at the moment."

Vickers-Willis took Port Melbourne’s Hugh Sandilands out of the game.

"He did it really well. He was quite impressive really … he’d be hard to play on, he doesn’t give them much space."

4. Ruckman Daniel Currie impressed with his effort.

"He kicked a nice goal, took a couple of really telling marks, laid some good tackles. It was a really, really solid performance.

"His ability to follow up, lay tackles, lay blocks and get possession was really telling."

Most likely call-ups: Lachlan Hansen, Majak Daw
