Ryan Bastinac is confident playing and training in different positions will hold him in good stead to become a more versatile player.
Speaking to the Herald Sun, Bastinac admitted 2014 was a difficult year as he tried to adapt to an outside midfield role.
“Last pre-season I just trained as an inside middy, so I didn’t really know how to play the wing and forward line that much when it got to games during that year,” he said.
“This pre-season I’ve played every role and I’ve got a good understanding of it, so when I do play on a wing or forward I know what I have to do.
“I’ve spent the majority (of summer) with the midfield, but I’ve played everywhere.”
Known for his endurance and ability to run out games, Bastinac would have been surprised to be donning the substitute vest during North’s finals campaign.
With an impressive pre-season under his belt, he’s hoping for a change of fortunes.
“Hopefully this year is a lot better than 2014, it was pretty disappointing last year,” Bastinac said.
“I’ve had my best pre-season so far, I’m back to my peak fitness that I was of a few years ago so it’s been a good summer for me.
“It’s just been good to have a full pre-season and get back to my full endurance base.”
While the emergence of Levi Greenwood made it hard to make an impact in the Roos’ midfield last year, Bastinac said he isn’t driven to fill a supposed hole.
“I try not to think (Greenwood leaving) gives me an opportunity, because I want to force my way into the team no matter what,” he said.
“I try not to think of it like that, but I guess you can see it that way as well.
“But if Levi was still here I’d be trying to do everything I can to force my way into the side as well and become the player I know I can be.”
